Children are especially vulnerable to the effects of microplastics. Research shows that children under the age of six inhale three times as many microplastics as adults. This is partly because they often put things in their mouths and because they spend a lot of time on the floor, where they are more exposed to microplastic fibers from house dust and carpets.
Young children also absorb more microplastics than adults. Research shows that newborns and one-year-old babies have significantly higher concentrations of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in their bodies than adults. This is likely caused by the use of plastic baby bottles and toys. This is worrisome as children's bodies and immune systems are still developing, making them more susceptible to the potential health risks.
As the amount of microplastic fibers in our environment increases, so does our exposure to them. Children are especially vulnerable here, due to their higher levels of exposure and potential health consequences. While it is difficult to completely avoid exposure to microplastics, it is critical to take the risks seriously and prevent further harm.
